Jalia has extensive experience in supporting SMEs and large businesses to improve business strategies and incorporate sustainability in their business strategy. Through her role as the International Sustainability collaborations projects coordinator at Bangor University, Jalia led several collaborative sustainability research projects between Uganda and the UK aimed at supporting Ugandan agribusinesses to adopt environmentally friendly technologies, that use biobased waste/materials to create new products; and use environmentally friendly processes in Agri-processing and agricultural production. Among these were: A collaborative pineapple value addition project between the Bio-Composites Centre-Bangor University, the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) and the Pineapple business cluster under the Innovations Cluster Program at Makerere University, which works with pineapple farmers in Uganda. This project explored value addition opportunities to Ugandan pineapples by using the whole plant and waste to make new products like environmentally friendly shoe parts, internal car upholstery parts as well as products like glucose, pharmaceutical products, and flavourings from fruit waste. Hence reducing waste while creating new value. Jalia also worked on the “Stover Pack Project” funded by Innovate UK and Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), aimed at creating a new value proposition for waste maize stover in Uganda. This project maize farmers in Uganda as well as academia and businesses from Uganda and UK. As a result, environmentally friendly packaging, an alternative to plastic was created from waste maize stock, and the potential for agricultural sector to embrace this technology with financial support was established. She worked with the Low Carbon Energy and Environmental Research Network Wales, a nationwide program supporting research institutions to support low carbon energy and environmental research, required to meet current business and domestic energy needs and has supported collaborative projects with Africa including technologies that foster carbon capture, industrial processes and energy efficiency by turning waste energy and carbon into new energy sources and using agricultural waste to create low carbon energy, including gas from farm waste as well as fertilisers She worked on collaborative projects that promote regenerative agriculture and circular economy principles in Uganda and the UK which promote adoption of environmentally friendly farming methods. She consulted for IFC-World Bank Group, department of Trade and Competitiveness -SME Growth & Productivity, to Conduct research aimed at Identifying Opportunities and Challenges of Boosting Productivity and Market Access of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) In Agribusiness – Linking SMES to Technology and Markets for Growth in Uganda. She also consulted for IFC-World Bank Group on the “Africa Schools Project” in Uganda that provided private schools with business advisory services to attract loans from commercial banks. She was the Lead sustainability officer for the North Wales Business Academy (NWBA) and ION Leadership program in North Wales, which were EU and Welsh Government funded projects providing business and sustainability support to SMEs in North Wales-UK.
